Celebrating Thai cuisine and culture

WORLD ON YOUR PLATE: THAI

This Saturday, 11 September

Thailand is often referred to as a golden land because the country gives off a certain lustre; be it the fertile rice fields of the central plains, white sandy beaches or the warm hospitality of the people. A typical Thai meal will have a balance of tastes: hot (spicy), sweet, sour, salty and occasionally, bitter. The country's cuisine shows influences from its neighbours: Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and China. There is a long tradition of vegetable and fruit carving in Thailand and an authentic fruit carver takes the stage to perform this intricate art form.

Thai Culture NZ will also cook a variety of Siamese cuisine, followed by tastings. They will also be special performances, including the ranaht and ungaloong string and bamboo instruments, and dancers in traditional attire.

LATE at Auckland Museum

LATE 08 — Innovate Crime and Justice

Smart Talk.  Great Music.

Thursday 7 October
6.30pm - 11pm

Smart Talk

Professor Greg Newbold, Sam Chapman, Professor Warren Brookbanks.

According to the oft-quoted statistics, New Zealand has the second highest per capita incarceration rate in the developed world, albeit a distant second to the United States. Does this mean we are a particularly crime-prone nation, and if so why? Or does it suggest we’ve got something wrong with our criminal justice system and that we’re now in a cycle of recidivist offending and reoffending precisely because our jails have become “universities of crime”?

Great Music

Great Music and Dance: Premier dance pieces from the Footnote Dance Company accompanied by NZ’s top contemporary musicians.
